  Medical Trials FAQ

1 > What is a medical trial?
A medical trial comes under a few names – clinical trials, drug trials, clinical research, medical research – but all fundamentally mean the same thing. Medical researchers conduct medical trials for many different reasons. A clinical trial could be used to test a new drug or vaccine or to try a previously tested drug on larger samples of the population.

Medical trials are vital for the development of treatments for diseases and illnesses. Without clinical trials, it would be hard for researchers to gain a better understanding of the many diseases that exist in the world today. If you think of all the pills, creams ointments etc that are available in your local chemist, they have probably all been tested in a medical trial at some stage.

2 > Who is allowed to participate in medical trials?
BioTrax features many different medical trials where clinics look for all kinds of different people – male, female, twenty year olds, eighty year olds etc - however, this doesn’t mean that everyone is always eligible to participate in any medical trial. Clinics publish strict inclusion and exclusion criteria which could require that participants are a certain age, sex, healthy, patient etc.

3 >Are medical trials dangerous?
Imagine how strict a restaurant has to be on food hygiene. There are strict guidelines stating how and where their food must be prepared, how it must be stored and how it must be served. Now imagine how strict the guidelines are when it comes to medical trials! The industry is constantly regulated and the clinics have very strict rules to follow when conducting clinical trials.

All of this aside, there is always a risk of side effects when testing new drugs in a medical trial. Before starting a clinical trial you will be given some forms that supply you with all of the information about the medical trial that you are participating in. Some of this information includes the reasons why the research is being done in the first place and the potential risks of the medical trial. This is called Informed Consent and it allows you to gain a full understanding of what it is you are testing. But remember, when you enrol in a medical trial, you can withdraw at any time.

4 > Are there any financial rewards for taking part in a medical trial?
While money shouldn’t be the reason that you participate in a clinical trial, most clinics do offer some kind of financial reimbursement for your time and inconvenience. Some medical trials may require you to spend quite a lot of time at a clinic and will therefore reimburse you anything up to £120 a day. The clinics pay you for the time that you dedicate to a medical trial and not for your general participation.

Other research such as psychology studies can pay anything up to £7.50 and hour. Of course, BioTrax features many more opportunities than just medical trials. We have a comprehensive list of credible mystery shopping companies, film and TV extra agencies and promotional staffing companies. Mystery shopping can pay anything up to £25 for a shop and will often let you keep your purchase. As a film or TV extra, you can earn up to £200 a day and see yourself on TV!
